Interview techniques
It is no exaggeration to say that skill at interviews can make or break your career. It is an opportunity to highlight your achievements and sell yourself into the job. Making a good impression is extremely important – so look, act and dress professionally - and conservatively. The rule is for a dark suit and tie, or a skirt and jacket. Get advice from professionals, if necessary. Read more in our guide to your personal makeover.
Before the interview, prepare well by researching the organisation – via the internet, annual reports, newspapers, magazines, industry bodies and from JRS - we will brief you on the client. Prepare relevant questions: Why is the position available? What training will be given? Is there ongoing professional development? What are the company’s plans?
The interviewer usually makes a judgment within the first minute of meeting you. The remainder of the interview is spent confirming or overturning the opinion. Arrive early - being late will put you on the defensive. Be respectful but not intimidated. Answer questions honestly and directly. Prepare answers to difficult questions.
Ensure that your body language projects open and positive messages: no crossed arms, face the interviewer, lean forward slightly and maintain good eye contact. More information on interview subject areas...
